It’s been a busy weekend of football action from senior league intensity to grassroots determination across Aberdeen!
Saturday’s main event came from Balmoral Stadium, where Cove Rangers hosted Hamilton Academical in a thrilling encounter that had everything — goals, controversy, and a relentless fighting spirit. After falling behind, Cove produced a fantastic second‑half comeback, capped beautifully by Chris McGuire’s perfectly struck free‑kick to rescue a well‑earned point. There were also two strong penalty appeals for Cove turned down by the officials, and a highly questionable Hamilton goal awarded following what appeared to be a VAR intervention overturning an original offside call. A dramatic afternoon that left plenty to debate.
Sunday’s focus shifted to New Advocates Park, the home of Aberdeen East End, for two youth fixtures in the Alba Gasket Leagues.
The first match saw Aberdeen East End U14s face Hermes Bridge of Don Blues in the B League. It was truly a game of two halves — Hermes dominated the first half with disciplined play and quick movement, while East End took control after the break, pressing hard for an equaliser. Unfortunately, the poor playing surface made passing football difficult, but the players’ effort and commitment shone through. Hermes eventually edged it 3‑2 in a tight finish.
The second fixture featured Aberdeen East End U15s up against West End in the A League. Once again, the heavy pitch conditions made flowing football tough, leading to long spells of play off the deck. Both sides created chances, but West End proved more clinical where it mattered, taking a 3‑1 win from what was otherwise an evenly contested match.
Despite the conditions, it was another enjoyable weekend capturing the passion and perseverance that define football at every level — from professional stadiums to community pitches across the North‑East.
