Cove Rangers produced a ruthless attacking display to cruise into the next round of the Scottish Challenge Cup, hammering Dumbarton 6–1 in driving wind and rain at the Balmoral Stadium on Tuesday night.
Fast start, quick response – in awful conditions
The Sons actually struck first. Connor Campbell nodded Dumbarton ahead in the 24th minute, capitalising on a momentary lapse in the home defence as both sides battled a gusty, wet night. The lead lasted barely 60 seconds. Jordan White restored parity with a powerful header from the centre of the box, assisted by Edimondo Oppong, to make it 1–1 in the 25th minute.
First-half control despite the weather
From that point on, Cove took control. Destiny Oladipo put the hosts in front before the break, finishing well in the 39th minute after good build-up play, with White picking up an assist. At half-time it was 2–1, but the scoreline could easily have been more one-sided given the number of chances created – all while players and fans alike were battered by relentless wind and rain.
Second-half onslaught
The second half was a procession. White completed his brace in the 53rd minute, again finding the net from close range to make it 3–1. Arron Darge extended the lead four minutes later with a crisp strike from outside the box, slamming the ball into the bottom corner to make it 4–1.
Liam Parker added a fifth in the 73rd minute, driving a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner from distance, assisted by Tristan Stephen. Ryan Harrington put the icing on the cake deep into stoppage time, heading home from a Parker delivery to complete a 6–1 rout.
For Cove, it’s a statement win in the Challenge Cup, showcasing depth, clinical finishing, and the kind of attacking variety that will worry opponents in League One – especially on a night when the weather made life difficult for everyone on the pitch and in the stands. For Dumbarton, it’s a night to forget, with defensive frailties brutally exposed against a side in full flow.
