This weekend provided a brilliant mix of photography, taking me from the colourful streets of Blackpool to the intensity of Scottish football before finishing the evening in the vibrant atmosphere of Aberdeen’s nightlife.
Street Photography in Blackpool
The weekend began with a day trip to Blackpool with my daughter, combining family time with an opportunity to practise street photography. With Rebellion Festival taking place across the town, Blackpool was full of character, colour, and individuality. The streets were filled with punks, skinheads, rockers, and festivalgoers, each bringing their own style and personality to the event. There was a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere throughout the day, with people enjoying the sunshine, meeting friends, and making the most of the festival weekend.
For street photography, events like Rebellion offer endless opportunities. The clothing, hairstyles, expressions, and interactions create authentic moments that tell the story of the day. Capturing these portraits was a reminder of how much visual interest can be found in everyday surroundings when people feel comfortable being themselves.
East Fife 2–0 Cove Rangers FC
Saturday brought a very different photographic challenge as I travelled to East Fife with Cove Rangers FC for their William Hill League 1 fixture.
Cove worked hard throughout the match, but East Fife proved to be the more streetwise side. The Fifers remained patient, took advantage of their late opportunities, and eventually secured a 2–0 victory. The result was decided in the closing stages, with East Fife finding the finishing touch needed to punish Cove and take all three points.
From a photography perspective, football provides a completely different rhythm from street and event work. The challenge is anticipating the key moments — the tackles, celebrations, frustration, and reactions — while following the pace of the game. Even in a disappointing result, there were plenty of moments that reflected the determination and competitive nature of the fixture.
Nightclub Photography in Aberdeen
After the football, the weekend continued with a night of nightclub photography in Aberdeen, capturing local DJs performing at Prohibition Nightclub.
The atmosphere changed completely, with the energy of the crowd, colourful lighting, and music creating a fast-moving environment to work in. The focus was on documenting the DJs in action, as well as the partygoers enjoying the drinks, dancing, and atmosphere around them.
Nightclub photography requires quick reactions and an ability to work with challenging light. Between the movement, changing colours, and low-light conditions, every image depends on timing and positioning. It was a great opportunity to continue developing my club photography and build on my growing experience within Aberdeen’s nightlife scene.
Three Different Photographic Experiences
What made the weekend so enjoyable was the variety of environments and subjects. Blackpool offered expressive street portraits, East Fife brought the drama and emotion of live football, and Prohibition provided the energy of DJs and nightlife. Each setting required a different approach, but all three shared one important element: capturing genuine moments as they happened. It was a busy but rewarding weekend, and I’m looking forward to continuing to develop my work across street, sports, music, and event photography.
